About Me
Maura Brewer moved to Vancouver, WA at age 12 and has called it 'home' ever since. She has been involved with music since toddler-hood and she is passionate about the power of music to enrich people's lives! Her formative years were spent taking piano lessons, learning flute, participating in bands and choirs, taking voice lessons, writing/arranging her own music, and playing, singing and conducting music in church.
Maura graduated from Brigham Young University with a BM in Music Education: Elementary Music Specialist with dual teacher's certifications in Music Education and also K-8 Elementary Classroom. While in college, she performed with BYU's Concert Choir, participated in opera choruses of university opera productions, taught music at the on-campus kindergarten, was president of the university's student chapter of OAKE (BYUFOLKS), accompanied beginning singing classes, and taught piano lessons in her apartment.
While taking a course called "Careers in Music" her freshman year in college, Maura was leaning towards becoming a high school choir teacher, but after seeing the presentation on how music positively affects very young children and their family's lives, she knew she needed to change directions with her schooling and specialize in elementary music education. Most everybody agrees that music enriches people's lives. Studies have also shown, that learning music can improve abilities in other aspects, such as social skills, brain function, memory, literacy, and math skills. This is especially true of children. During college, Maura loved learning all the ins and outs of how music enriches children's lives and how to teach children in effective ways.
After graduating, Maura continued to teach piano from her home, completed level 1 Kodaly Certification, and taught full time as a K-6 music specialist at an elementary school in Provo, UT. After the birth of her first child, Maura chose to devote more time to her family and stopped teaching at the elementary school, and continued to teach from her home. Before moving back to the Northwest, Maura was hired to be the director of the Orem Children's Chorale, a community children's choir in Orem, UT, but she left that opportunity to move back home to Vancouver. She is passionate about music and she loves children!
Maura married her high school sweetheart and they have 5 children; two daughters and three sons. When she is not teaching, she enjoys cooking, crafting, running, hiking, and spending time with her family.
